Slavery was rampant in the past but I guess you're just referring to black slavery, it did happen but wasn't all that much compared to the amount and duration of slavery or other races, most of which is still ongoing. For blacks it was on the whole a net benefit too. Those that made it across the Atlantic bettered themselves and their lineage, some also intermixed with whites.
